Pricing & Budget
Most West Campus apartments lease by the bedroom, so your student is only responsible for their own room — not a roommate's. Look for "starting at" prices and check what's actually included: Wi-Fi, utilities (watch for caps and overage fees), and parking, which often runs $100+/month extra in West Campus garages. Most places ask for a guarantor, and summer subleases are common if plans change.
Walkability & Transportation
Best-kept open secret: UT students ride all CapMetro buses, rail, and Rapid routes free with a UT ID, and seven free UT shuttle routes run Sunday through Friday. A free grocery shuttle runs select Saturdays and Sundays (reserve ahead). In West Campus, most students walk or bike everywhere and never touch a car.
Safety & Security
Late nights are covered. SURE Walk gives free walking escorts or cart rides seven nights a week, 8pm–2am (512-232-9255). UT Night Rides offers free Lyft credits from 11pm–4am nightly. West Campus Ambassadors walk with students until 3am Mon–Wed and around the clock Thu–Sun (512-429-3278). Stick to well-lit streets like Guadalupe and 24th, and tour any building at night before signing.
Pet-Friendly Options
If the pet's coming, read the fine print: pet deposits and monthly pet rent are separate from your rent, and breed or weight limits are common. Local favorites include Zilker Park's off-leash area and Pease Park, and some complexes like 26 West and Signature 1909 have their own bark parks.
Study & Work Spaces
PCL (the Perry-Castañeda Library) is study headquarters, with the Flawn Academic Center and Texas Union close behind — check PCL's late-night hours each semester, since they shift. Many complexes also have study lounges, printing stations, and private study rooms built in.
Jobs & Internships
Downtown is about 10 minutes by bus and the Domain tech corridor is an easy CapMetro ride - both big internship territory. Closer to home, the Drag is full of part-time jobs, and UT's Texas Career Engagement office connects students with internships across Austin.
Social Life & Activities
Game days at DKR Stadium, workouts at Gregory Gym, nights on 6th Street, weekends at Barton Springs and Zilker Park, afternoons on South Congress. With 1,000+ registered student orgs, there's a group for just about everything - and West Campus keeps all of it close.
Parent Peace-of-Mind
Individual leases mean your student is only liable for their own room. Look for professional on-site management, online maintenance requests, and clear emergency contacts. And save these: SURE Walk (512-232-9255) and West Campus Ambassadors (512-429-3278) — free late-night escorts, every night.
Where the Locals Go
The Drag for tacos, coffee, and everything else. Torchy's (born in Austin). H-E-B runs. Barton Springs Pool when it's hot - which is often. The Lady Bird Lake trail for runs and sunsets. Living in West Campus puts all of it within minutes.
